During her INDEX residency, Fiona Greenland advanced her research on natiocide — the deliberate destruction of a nation — drawing on the framework of Raphael Lemkin and its recent development by Ukrainian legal scholar Volodymyr Pylypenko. Her forthcoming book To Kill a Nation (Princeton University Press, 2026) extends this concept into sociology and cultural studies, analysing how Ukrainians unite to defend their national community while rethinking the meaning of nationhood.

The residency enabled essential fieldwork in Ukraine. Greenland conducted eight interviews, and traveled to Mykolaiv and Kherson regions to meet with the Rector and faculty of Petro Mohyla Black Sea University, and to document the war’s impact on education, libraries, and knowledge production. She also met literary critic Hanna Uliura, further enriching her research on the intersections of war, culture, and intellectual life.

Beyond her book project, Greenland wrote shorter academic and public texts, including a forthcoming review for the American Journal of Sociology and an essay for the American Sociological Association’s Culture Newsletter on Russia’s practice of “filtering” people by clothing, jewelry, tattoos, and other identity markers.
