Lost in Lviv, Lost in Interpretation
To explore a new city, you can start with the main tourist attractions, venture off the beaten track, immerse yourself in urban nature, or seek out exciting new food places. And sometimes, caught in the rhythm, you find yourself wandering aimlessly, resisting the urge to look at your phone, instinctively drawn to the written messages that surround you.
These messages guide, call, and persuade — offering profitable deals and carefully tailored appeals, as if marketers have envisioned exactly who might be walking through a particular part of the city and what might tempt them. The visual language of each city is both uniquely distinct and deceptively superficial, a monologue directed at the minds of passersby.
I don’t follow the signs, but I notice them. I hold them in my head, where they mix and transform, merging like ingredients in a pot. I let these words form my own thoughts and feelings, appropriating the public into the personal. Digested by my mind, they resurface in poetic form, burped back into existence. Or maybe, I’m just doing silly things while on a silly walk for my silly mental health.
