"How Have Ukrainians United to Support Internally Displaced Persons from 2014 to the Present?" Lecture by Dr. Emily Channell-Justice
Join us for a lecture by Emily Channell-Justice on the phenomenon of Ukrainians’ self-organisation to support internally displaced people (IDPs).
Dr Emily Channell-Justice is a sociocultural anthropologist, director of the Temerty Contemporary Ukraine Program at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and INDEX’s Scholar in Residence in October. She will present findings from her research on internal displacement in Ukraine, focusing on how Ukrainians have self-organised in response to Russia’s 2014 invasion.
Drawing on her earlier studies of the Euromaidan, Channell-Justice explores how civic initiatives, international and non-governmental organisations took on state functions in assisting internally displaced persons in the absence of a comprehensive state policy. She traces how prolonged displacement has reshaped people’s understanding of humanitarian aid, belonging and civic engagement.
The event will be moderated by Nataliia Vyshnevetska, head of the board at D.O.M.48.24, an organisation focused on the integration of internally displaced persons and the creation of an inclusive environment.
