Seminar “How Oral Histories Work: Academic and Popular Formats”

We invite documentarians, oral history researchers and content creators interested in using personal testimonies in their work to take part in the workshop “How Oral Histories Work: Academic and Popular Formats.” The seminar will take place at the Centre for Urban History of East-Central Europe, organised by Post Bellum Ukraine in collaboration with INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange.

About the seminar

Over the course of two days, we will discuss how to identify and engage with relevant audiences, find the right tone of communication for different audiences and work with the specific nature of oral history materials, including how to use them responsibly and effectively in today’s media landscape. We aim to draw on the participants’ practical experience and create space for peer learning, so participants are encouraged to be prepared for collaborative work and active discussion.

The seminar is designed to bring together and connect those who communicate complex ideas clearly to broad audiences and those who immerse themselves deeply in research, collecting the living diversity of witnesses’ and participants’ voices.

As part of the event, the Post Bellum Ukraine team will present a new handbook for journalists, bloggers and educators, offering practical tools for using oral history materials in their own work.

The seminar will be useful for:

  • Documentarians who collect and process oral history archives but lack popular formats for presenting them.
  • Content creators who already use or are interested in using oral testimonies in their work.
  • Researchers who gather oral history materials and wish to improve how they communicate their findings and/or learn new tools for knowledge sharing.
